In this exclusive interview, Neelesh Bhatnagar shares his venture capital philosophy, successful investments, and approach to addressing conflicts of interest within NB Ventures’ portfolio companies. Gain valuable insights from a seasoned professional in the industry.
How do you approach providing support and mentorship to the companies within your portfolio?
Our commitment to portfolio companies extends well beyond mere financial backing. We provide mentorship from experienced professionals, strategic guidance to chart clear paths for growth, and access to our extensive industry network for valuable partnerships and opportunities. We are deeply involved in optimizing resources, offering ongoing support to startups, and ensuring they make a positive impact in their respective fields.
Your transition from the retail sector to venture capital is intriguing. What motivated this career change?
My transition from the retail sector to venture capital was indeed a significant shift driven by several factors. My extensive experience in retail equipped me with a profound understanding of consumer behavior, market dynamics, and the challenges faced by traditional businesses. This knowledge allowed me to have a unique perspective on the evolving retail landscape with the emergence of e-commerce and digital technologies. I saw innovative startups reshaping the industry and recognized the potential for substantial growth in this dynamic space. Venture capital offered me an opportunity to actively participate in and support these disruptive technologies and innovative business models, leveraging my industry insights, extensive network, and financial expertise to identify and invest in promising startups that could transform not only the retail sector but various other industries as well.
Could you share your philosophy and approach when making investments?
Certainly. We are deeply committed to nurturing a sustainable ecosystem for innovative digital startups globally. Our investment approach combines practicality and foresight. We evaluate scalability, market potential, and exit strategies while also valuing the founder’s dedication to their venture. Our passion lies in supporting emerging digital leaders and playing a role in shaping a brighter future for all.
Can you provide examples of successful investments within your portfolio?
Of course. Here are a few noteworthy investments and ventures I’ve been involved with:
– Tech Investment: We recently invested in TEXUB, a global B2B marketplace revolutionizing the 3C trade worldwide, facilitating connections between buyers and sellers from around the world.
– Culinary Venture: In 2015, we launched ‘The Yellow Chilli by Sanjeev Kapoor’ restaurant in Dubai, offering authentic North Indian cuisine. It has since evolved into a well-established brand in the UAE with various dining formats.
– Sports Enthusiast: I’m passionate about sports investments and have been associated with United Pro Sports (now UPro). I also have connections with the Delhi Bulls cricket franchise in the Abu Dhabi T10 League. Being a Delhiite, I closely follow the games of the Delhi Capitals, which hold a special place in my heart. These investments have not only been financially successful but have also allowed me to explore diverse sectors and contribute to their growth.
How do you address potential conflicts of interest among your portfolio companies?

We have established clear policies, and if conflicts persist, we may engage independent advisors. Our primary objective is to protect the best interests of each company, and we are committed to handling conflicts with integrity and ethical considerations.
